Description
Repair worn fireplace masonry and restore damaged firebrick with RUTLAND Gray Fireplace Mortar. Featuring a versatile gray finish that complements traditional mortar joints and masonry surfaces, this high-temperature fireplace repair mortar provides a dependable solution for maintaining indoor fireplaces and wood-burning stoves.
Specially formulated for masonry-to-masonry bonding, RUTLAND Gray Fireplace Mortar is ideal for filling minor cracks, repairing chipped firebrick, re-pointing deteriorating joints, and bonding firebricks together. Its smooth, ready-to-use consistency makes application simple with a standard caulking gun, allowing for precise placement in narrow joints and damaged areas without the need for mixing.
With a temperature rating of up to 2000°F (1090°C), this refractory mortar is built to withstand the intense heat generated by wood fires. After proper heat curing, it develops a hard, strong bond comparable to firebrick for long-lasting masonry repairs. The cured mortar is also paintable, making it easy to achieve a coordinated finish. Application Instructions:
- Cut the nozzle tip at an angle to the desired opening size and insert the cartridge into a standard caulking gun.
- Fill the crack or hole with fireplace mortar, then smooth the surface using a putty knife dipped in water.
- Protect freshly applied mortar from direct contact with water until it has been fully heat cured.
- Allow the mortar to air dry for at least 24 hours, but no longer than 30 days, before heat curing.
- Start a low fire, keeping the temperature below 210°F until the mortar has dried thoroughly.
- Gradually increase the temperature and heat the mortar at 500°F for 1–2 hours to complete the final cure.
Important Application Notes:
- For cracks or joints deeper than 1/8 inch, apply the mortar in layers rather than filling the entire depth at once.
- Allow 24 hours of curing time between each layer.
- Once the mortar is tack-free, follow the recommended heat-curing process to complete the repair.
- For deeper cracks, use RUTLAND Castable Refractory Cement, Item #600/601.
