Description

Keep your fireplace masonry looking its best with RUTLAND Buff Fireplace Mortar. Designed for high-temperature fireplace repairs, this dependable mortar features a warm buff color that complements lighter firebrick, natural stone, and traditional masonry finishes.

Whether you're repairing small cracks, filling chipped firebrick, or re-pointing worn mortar joints, RUTLAND Buff Fireplace Mortar provides a strong, lasting bond between masonry surfaces. It can also be used to bond firebricks together, making it a practical solution for maintaining indoor fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. The ready-to-use 10.3 fl oz cartridge fits a standard caulking gun for convenient application without complicated mixing.

Application Instructions:

  1. Cut the nozzle tip at an angle to the desired opening size and insert the cartridge into a standard caulking gun.
  2. Fill the crack or hole with fireplace mortar, then smooth the surface using a putty knife dipped in water.
  3. Protect freshly applied mortar from direct contact with water until it has been fully heat cured.
  4. Allow the mortar to air dry for at least 24 hours, but no longer than 30 days, before heat curing.
  5. Start a low fire, keeping the temperature below 210°F until the mortar has dried thoroughly.
  6. Gradually increase the temperature and heat the mortar at 500°F for 1–2 hours to complete the final cure.

Important Application Notes:

  • For cracks or joints deeper than 1/8 inch, apply the mortar in layers rather than filling the entire depth at once.
  • Allow 24 hours of curing time between each layer.
  • Once the mortar is tack-free, follow the recommended heat-curing process to complete the repair.
  • For deeper cracks, use RUTLAND Castable Refractory Cement, Item #600/601.
